Unless and until the American Psychiatric Association recognized sex “addiction” as a real psychological disorder you really need to approach the subject the way they now look at it. This is, that hyper sexuality is a symptom of other, APA recognized psychological disorders and not a disorder itself. The success in treating people who are hyper sexual depends on a clear understanding of these underlying root causes. Without this understanding therapists tend to only treat the “scratch” and not the “itch” and relapse rates remain high.

The more interesting topic of discussion would be about those who are not hyper sexual but do prefer sex without intimacy. Often, in men especially, a discomfort with intimacy can be so serious and anxiety inducing that they often suffer from sexual dysfunctions during partner sex which further exacerbate their inability to have enjoyable sex within an intimate relationship and instead they can only function normally in sexual situations where they can keep their partner at arms length.
