Bravery is Sexy

When you do something courageous, people who love you get awe-struck. And that sense of awe makes their love for you expand.

Think about it. Even YOU love yourself so much more when you’re brave enough to go after what you really want. Last week, I did that and fell deeply in love with myself all over again. And so did my husband.

You see, I fulfilled a childhood dream that I once thought was impossible. Ever since I was a little girl, I’ve admired Planned Parenthood’s bravery in helping women obtain sexual healthcare, especially those that have been traumatized. And I’ve always wanted to partner with Planned Parenthood because I believe the healing process for survivors should include skills to establish satisfying sex relationships.

Last week, I was lucky enough to be hired by Planned Parenthood to train their team on Successful Sex for Trauma Survivors. And we focused on all types of survivors. Those who lost family members to gunshots, those who rebuilt their life after deportation, those who have bravely stood up and said, “#Metoo.” No one is more deserving of fulfilling sexual experiences than these survivors. But every successful relationship takes bravery.

It takes courage to tell your partner that you feel like you’ve grown apart and want to reconnect. It is so brave to hug someone that you love, but may not be getting along with at the moment. And it is awe-inspiring when someone is courageous enough to share their sexual past and the sexual future they want. Whether they say it to themselves or someone else. Being your authentic self is brave.

So when my husband heard my presentation was awe-inspiring, he also became brave. The reality was, we weren’t on the best of terms that day. In fact, we were barely speaking to each other (married women – ya’ll hear me?). But he dug deep into his courage box and placed my head tightly within his hands, looked me dead in the eye, and said, “I really really love you baby. And I’m so proud of you.” And his bravery was sexy.

In case you can’t tell, I’m not the easiest chick to be married to. But his eyes told me that, despite our challenges, I’m the best woman for him to be married to.

Today, I want you to be brave enough to do something that shows how much you love yourself or someone else. Make that call. Register for that class. Join that gym. Be the first one to say, “ I Love You.”
